Only one customer turned down the net rate offered; the rest of us were just probably too fored to care. So, unless you have a very deep pocket and endless patience, avoid Travelex in the Tambo transit area.
Avoid foreign exchange at all airports. You get a dreadful exchange rate, although if I pre order through Travelex here in the U.
K and pick it up at the airport desk at my departure airport I get a fairly good rate. Best way is to just use your card in an ATM, which is often recommended on here. The rates are definitely not attractive. Even though the transaction was reversed I never received the funds.
On the 18th of May I passed through the airport again and was made to sign papers and assured that the amount will be credited to my account within seven days. Today is the 25th May, sadly I'm yet to receive the refund.
My bank is helping me. As a Travelex customer, I am finding this very stressful!
Yes - as the OP noted - even when a Forex exchange runs as it is designed to do, it's still a clumsy and weird process. Your complaint is noted, we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused eschange were experiencing major system hurdles during this period that affected our service delivery and forex exchange at or tambo of our employees. We have since addressed this and are able to offer a speedy and efficient service.
Regarding the display of currencies we do rxchange 3 major currencies British Pound, US Dollar and the Euro at all times. Thanks to Travelex for the thoughtful reply.
Forex companies do serve travelers without debit cards from their local banks. You will not get as good an exchange rate at these as you will at an bank ATM.
The UK has a few credit cards that are excellent for travelling. Halifax clarity being the best as it doesn't charge transaction fees, both at ATMs and for purchases when abroad. When at home it is more economical to use a debit card to purchase currency as CC are charged. forex exchange at or tambo
Possibly the protection that a CC offers might be better abroad. I wonder if the Travelex reply is for the post from August or May ?
This is an old thread that was resurrected. As an added kicker, I was given 4 euros in coins which turned out to be pounds when I checked them later.
Visit there if you like being legally ripped off. Cheaper and safer is to use a creditcard master or Visa And you exchannge cheaper get Rands at any ATM, with your debit card.
To exhange money, it makes no differents which currency, is very expensice in S. Because the SA Central Bank still has a lot of control.
We will be arriving at Joburg airport at 5: Can we exchange USD for Rand just past immigration? There are 6 of us traveling together and I worry about not having Rand or finding a place to exchange over the weekend.
