Stocking options for a 20 gallon tank - 10 Best Fish for a Gallon Tank | PetHelpful
I think I got the chinese part wrong. Unless the pet store lied to me I think the fish I have do not get that big. Mollys get to be 5 inches.
There are thousands of species of catfish A good tip when deciding on fish is to mark down the rank of the fish at the store and then research that fish before deciding whether it would be a good choice for your tank. So how long will it take for me to create the perfect tank???
October 25, optons, I never knew how much harder fish keeping was. I mean I have had my betta fish for almost 3 years but bettas like never die I'm glad I found this site to get more help and knoledge about my fish.
My question still stands though, is my tank overstocked with what I have? I'm going to the store today to get 3 or 4 more.
Is this stock good for a 20g long tank? If it were me, I would return the mollies and catfish and then get about 8 more neons.
Those neons really look great in larger numbers. I would make sure the tank is healthy and fully cycled before adding new fish.

Plus you should always quarantine new fish to ensure they don't bring an illness into your tank. I found out the type of catfish I have is a type of cory catfish, its called a spilotus catfish.
All my fish are doing great, but I woke up this morning and one of my neons was stkcking, it was the smallest one out of my other neons so maybe the bigger ones didnt let it eat as much. I was not paying attention.
I would wait a while until I was sure the tank is stable since you had a death. So your catfish is one of these guys: I don't know a whole lot about them, but if they are anything like most corys then you will want to keep a group rather than a single individual.Stocking My 20 Gallon Fish Tank!
I would get 3 or 4 more. I would still return the mollies and up the neon numbers.
Personally, I think that 1 betta, about neons and 4 or 5 of those little cats would make a great tank. You wouldn't need anything else in there.
BUT, not until after you are sure it is stable. Plus I really enjoy them, I do have a 10g tank that I am not using so I think I might put them in there and just go with the neons and get more catfish like you said. It is just too small for them.
I know how it is to get attached to your fish but just think of what they will go through. They wouldn't have room to swim when they are adults and would be stunted.
Stunting is a terrible way for them to die. Your options would be either to get a larger tank that can support them or put them up for sale on Craig's List or some other such site.
Your shop may take them for free. Read the profile for them stockimg Belinda gave to you Also, please read the link that Crazy Cat gave you.
You will notice that corys need to be in groups because they are a very sociable fish. The remarks about quarantine are very important. Never, ever add new fish to a tank when there has been a recent death.
And always qt any new fish that you get. You don't want to introduce any disease to your main tank.

Hello everyone, I have a 20g long fish tank and right now I have 3 q tetras 4 mollys 3 ghost shrimp 1 betta 1 chineese catfish Is this too much for my tank or can I add more??? Full Member Offline Gender: I would up the neon's to at least 6.
I am pretty sure my mollys are all male from what I've read on how to tell their sex. I'll defer the overstocked question to a more experienced member as I am still fairly new at choosing stocking stocming.
The filter is a Aqueon for a 10g, 20g medium filter. I'm concerned about your chinese catfish, is it a chinese algae eater?
Hi there, What are you testing with strips or liquid re-agents? Welcome to badman's Hugh.
Crystal, your tank may be optinos through a mini-cycle. Not sure he would be happy in a 20 gallon with active fish in it. And agree with the small group of Cories in place of two poached.
That would be a nice tank. Here's a great website to tell you about your stocking choices: I hear gouramis may spread disease too I don't want that hehe.
Some good color mixes too. They do seem like good fish. Should definately check the site out it's pretty easy to use. You NEED to add more aquarium filtration capacity!!! Recommended water change schedule: I would definitely add another Aquaclear Easy enough on a tank that size.
As long as OP does necessary waterchanges and doesn't add any other fish that would create issue aggressive,or large waste creators the fish they chose would probably do well IMO. I know it seems trivial but is tank 20 long or tall? I'll look into that It's 20 gallon tall.
Last edited by PFeathre; at Many options for food. But with Cories, you definitely need some sinking pellets. I feed my fish primarily Zoo Med Spirulina 20 flake food.
You may only be able to find that online. But I believe Bandit will agree it is worth the inconvenience. I supplement their diet with frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp about one or twice a week each.
Then once a week I give them vegetables The Cories get shrimp pellets every day. And twice a week, I throw in a piece of algae wafer
